Cayman protected areas expanded under 2026 order

Six ecologically significant sites across Cayman have been formally designated under the National Conservation (Protected Areas) Order 2026.

Cayman seeks to increase protected land areas

The 11.3% of Cayman's landmass designated as Terrestrial Protected Areas falls significantly short of an international target of 30% by 2030, but if a recent round of nominations for newly protected land leads to further protections, the islands will move nearer to that goal.

Critical habitat plan for endangered seabirds

The National Conservation Council is asking for public input on a plan to designate critical habitats for dwindling nesting seabird populations across the Cayman Islands, to stave off "imminent" local extinction.
