Despite fierce competition by 12 other eager teams, the Mexicans captured the coveted title of Best Water Stop for a second time at the annual Cayman Islands Marathon, which took place this past weekend, and was sponsored by Cingular Wireless.
A name change this year – from Viva Mexico! to Fiesta Mexicana – did not alter the level of enthusiasm, motivation and excitement that the team brought to the almost 200 runners. Organised by Gina Connolly, the Mexicans put on another unforgettable show that included Mexican flags, music, traditional costumes, signs, face paintin and even tequila. They also broke a piñata at the finish line after the race.
‘The Mexicans were one of the first teams to sign on again for the race this year and, as usual, they did not disappoint,’ said race organiser Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd. ‘In fact all of our water stop teams were amazing. They were enthusiastic, supportive and, most of all, they did their job – which was to give water to the runners. We could not have asked for a better group of people to assist us.’
Gina Connolly of Fiesta Mexicana said the event was first-rate.
‘This was a great experience for us. We had such a good time last year that we decided to do it again this year and it was just as fun. When you’re running such long distances, you need as much support and encouragement as you can get and we wanted to give that to our runners.’
The water station competition is part of the organizers’ efforts to liven up the race while providing essential support to the runners, such as water, Gatorade and energy boosting snacks. Runners vote for the best water stop along the route and the team with the most votes wins five Cayman Airways return tickets. Kelly is looking into the possibility of offering second and third prizes in the next race which will take place on Sunday, 3 December 2006.
The other water stop teams were Texaco Stars, Appleby Spurling Hunter, West Bay Community Council, Z99 & Rooster 101, Cayman National, One Love Rest Stop, Fiesta Mexicana, Phoenix Athletic Club, NSMCC, Wata, United Democratic Party, Cingular Wireless’ Greased Lightning and Breezes Restaurant.
The Cingular Wireless Cayman Islands Marathon was presented by Texaco and sponsored by the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, Cayman Airways, Z99, Breezes by the Bay Restaurant, Flowers Bottled Water, Cayman National, Gatorade, The Final Touch, KPMG and CUC.
