The Opening of the Wendy’s Digicel National Basketball League started with a big bang as George Town Sports Club squared off against last year’s winners, Shaolin Warriors.
After the tip off, GTSC’s Andres Kirchman scored two quick points trying to set the tempo of the game, but the experience of the defending champs were too much for GTSC, resulting in a 13 point lead sparked by young gun Ariel Whittaker towards the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, GTSC applied a deadly press defense that caused Shaolin to turnover the basketball, resulting in fast break lay-ups and easy second-chance points. This display of defense was led by Jorge Ebanks who forced lots of turnovers and made key baskets down the stretch.
George Town regained the lead with 5:26 left on the clock and tried to hold Shaolin off, but the Warriors fought back to give themselves a chance after being down by 11 points to 3 points with 3 seconds left in the clock. Shaolin’s Collin Anglin tried to pull of a Michael-Jordan-type shot to tie the game, but came up short in this well-fought battle. Fans stormed to court to celebrate the victory with George Town’s players.
Top Scorers Collin Anglin 22, Ariel Whittaker 14 (Shaolin)
