Water extension contract awarded

Construction Management & Engineering Co. Ltd. has been awarded the contract to carry out pipeline extensions into roads off Frank Sound Rd.

Since the pipe laying for the North Side Water Supply Extension project commenced in late 2003, the Water Authority received many requests from residents in roads off Frank Sound Road for piped water service.

The Water Authority’s in-house pipe laying crew will concentrate on extending the water distribution system into the North Side district for the next few years, so the Water Authority decided to competitively tender the pipe laying works in the Frank Sound area.

The contract includes mobilisation on site, site clearance, trench excavation, laying, jointing and testing of about 18,000 linear feet of three-inch, four-inch and six-inch PVC pipelines, backfilling to existing grade levels, testing, and final cleaning of the site and demobilization.

The project construction period is 180 days. All side roads off Frank Sound Road, between Frank Sound Junction and Botanic Road, are included in this contract.

The Water Authority will provide general construction supervision, provide the pipes and fittings, disinfect the new pipelines and connect them to the existing distribution system after satisfactory pressure testing. The Authority will also be responsible for the final reinstatement of pipe trenches.

The total number of existing houses in the project area is 75, representing about 200 residents.

‘We recognise that projects such as this one are important to the continued development of the island’s infrastructure and I congratulate the Authority on moving forward with the extension of the piped water supply,’ said Dr. Frank McField, Minister responsible for water.

Water Authority Director, Dr. Gelia Frederick-van Genderen, also expressed her pleasure in seeing the project move forward.

‘We look forward to work commencing next month. I encourage all residents located between the Frank Sound junction and the Botanic Park to apply for our piped water services,’ she said.

She also noted that the Customer Service Department has already started accepting applications.

The Water Authority is the statutory body responsible for the management of water and wastewater in the Cayman Islands. The Administrative Headquarters is at 13G Red Gate Road, George Town, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
