A delay in the arrival of replacement mailboxes and other equipment for the Seven Mile Beach Post Office has postponed its re-opening date.
Originally set to re-open mid-May, Postmaster General Sheena Glasgow said the Westshore Centre location likely won’t be up and running until after the June long weekend.
‘As with everything after Ivan, a lot of this is just out of our hands,’ she said. ‘Customers have been patient and understanding and are as eager to get things back to normal as I am.’
The Seven Mile Beach Post Office suffered major structural and water damage from the storm after its roof collapsed. Nearly all of its equipment and furniture was destroyed and salt water damaged more than 1,600 mailboxes.
Replacement mailboxes arrived last Friday and Ms Glasgow is expecting the postal equipment to be on island by the end of next week.
The post office has been renovated with a number of changes made to improve operations and customer service including an expanded philatelic bureau. Ms Glasgow said the customer service counter has been re-designed to make it more user-friendly. The revamped facility also features an updated colour scheme.
People have been picking up their mail at the Airport Post Office since the storm.
Ms Glasgow said both customers and staff are eager for the Westshore facility to re-open.
‘My airport staff will be happy because our mail processing operations have been kind of cramped there because we’re accommodating another post office.’
Customers and staff aren’t the only ones looking forward to its re-opening.
‘Everybody in the shopping centre is anxious to see it back,’ said Rick Hill, manager at Kennedy Gallery in the Westshore complex. ‘It’s a major draw for this shopping centre.’
Ms Glasgow said a re-opening date will be announced once the mailboxes and equipment is installed.
