A lesson in ‘Things Caymanian’ had Year 1 and 2 students at Cayman Prep Primary Music Department skipping to the beat on Tuesday.
Drumming up a storm for the students was well-known musician Julia Hydes.
Ninety-six years old and still going strong, Ms Hydes told the students about her life-long love and passion for playing music.
Teacher Lorna Bailey explained the visit was part of an ongoing social studies programme in which the students were learning about their Caymanian heritage.
‘All week long the students have been participating in various activities such as learning the Cayman symbols, its culture, people and foods,’ she said.
‘Today Ms Julia was invited for the students to hear and see how she plays her drums as well as tell of her music days.’
Entertaining the students with her many songs on the drum, Ms Hydes answered questions on the make of her drum, how long she had been playing and why she loved the drums so much.
With a cheery smile Ms Julia said she had been playing the drums since she was 15 years old all over the island.
She told the students that most of the songs she played she wrote herself.
‘I must have been built for playing music,’ she said to the students. She added her passion and love further developed when she was invited by a cousin to play the drums.
Ms Bailey noted a number of Cayman artefacts will be coming into the school for the students to view throughout the week.
‘A lady from West Bay will also demonstrate the art of thatch weaving and plaiting.’
