An East Ender who has been resident in the United States for the 35 years has been recognized by the state of New Jersey, which has renamed a Water Environment Association award in his honour.
Ike Welcome, retired superintendent for the Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority, received the accolade during the last month’s New Jersey Water Environment Association’s 90th conference in Atlantic City.
Mr. Welcome, who has been in the water pollution-control business for 33 years, was the 1995 recipient of the State Collection System Award, now renamed the Ike Welcome Collection System Award.
‘I’m honoured and proud that my efforts have been recognized by the state with such a gesture,’ Mr. Welcome said in a press release.
‘This has come about through hard work and the support of my colleagues, who also share in the prestige of such an award.’
Mr. Welcome is married to former East Ender Ina Wood and lives in Freehole, New Jersey. The couple has three sons: Trent, Phil and Vince. The Welcomes plan to return permanently to Grand Cayman in the near future.
