Huw Moses receives OBE

Topping the list of this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours is Huw Moses, who was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (Civil Division) (OBE) for his contributions to the financial-services industry and to the community.

The managing partner of the Cayman and BVI offices of the offshore law firm Appleby Spurling Hunter was among eight granted Queen’s Birthday Honours during a ceremonial parade in front of the Legislative Assembly on Saturday.

‘It is a great honour to receive the OBE in recognition of services to the community of the Cayman Islands,’ said Mr. Moses.

‘My wife, Kim, and I have always sought opportunities, through participation in charitable organizations and community endeavours, to give something back to the country we call home.’

Mr. Moses was among the key players leading the nation’s recovery efforts immediately after Hurricane Ivan as part of a strategic recovery committee chaired by the Governor.

He was also involved in the formation of a private charity, the Cayman Islands Recovery Fund, set up shortly after the storm to assist those hardest hit by Ivan.

Originally from South Wales, Mr. Moses moved to Cayman in 1993 to join the firm of Hunter & Hunter. He became partner four years later. Instrumental in the planned expansion of the firm, he was appointed managing partner in 2002 and, with senior partner Bruce Putterill, led a small team that negotiated the firm’s combination with the Bermuda-based firm of Appleby Spurling & Kempe, leading to the creation of Appleby Spurling Hunter in 2004.

The firm now has offices in five countries and practises law in Bermuda, BVI and the Cayman Islands.

The firm recently won the prestigious Chamber’s Global ‘Offshore Law Firm of the Year’, an achievement all the more impressive given the significant damage and business interruption cause by the hurricane.

Mr. Moses has been strong supporter of the National Trust and, through his role with Appleby, has actively supported community events and local charities.

Receiving the Queen’s Honours marks a milestone for Mr. Moses, who says rebuilding Cayman remains a top priority.

‘There’s still a tremendous amount of work to do. I look forward to continuing my work as a trustee (of the fund) as the country continues to recover from Hurricane Ivan.’
