Cinema opens next month

Cinema 1 & 2 on West Bay Road is set to open on 13 July.

Patrons can look forward to bigger screens, more seats, a new digital-sound system, two food stations that will operate independently, bigger popping and ice machines and a darker interior. Prices will increase, although they have not been set.

Under new management, the newly renovated cinema will boast state-of-the-art audio-visual technology.

It will become a subsidiary of Kingston, Jamaica’s Palace Amusement Company, said new licensed proprietors, Kingston’s Douglas and Melaine Graham.

In the business for many years, the husband-and-wife team control more than 14 screens at six locations around Jamaica.

They previously were long-time suppliers of films for the cinema. ‘It seems very natural for us to invest in the business,’ said Mrs. Graham.

‘After the hurricane we saw that nothing was happening with the screens here and no one knew when it would be opened, so we decided we would put a proposal and it came through.’

‘Because we operate in a slightly different style, we would like to keep it on par with what we do in Jamaica. To start we will bring managers from Jamaica for a short while, but working at the facilities will be mostly Caymanians,’ she said.

Interior colours at the cinema have changed. What was once white is now black with orange trimming.

‘White reflects light and focus is not directed specifically on the screen. We have darkened everything so that you are totally focused on the screen and you feel as if you are a part of what is going on,’ she said.

The proprietors have added more seats, but with lots of leg room. The facility offers 572 seats, 350 in Cinema 1 and 222 in Cinema 2.

Because of the digital-sound system, the proprietors say patrons will be able to appreciate everything on film aurally, as well on screen because they have changed the lens.

‘We have gone from six speakers to 16. That’s just a signal of how much we have upgraded,’ they said.

Also offered at the cinema will be movie vouchers and discounted prices for senior citizens and students.
