Consolidated Water has dedicated its refurbished and restored Governor’s Harbour water treatment, storage and distribution facility, naming it for one of the original employees of Cayman Water Company, Abel Castillo.
The board of directors resolved in October 2004 to dedicate the Governor’s Harbour facility to Mr. Castillo, who died in May last year.
Cayman Water Company changed its name to Consolidated Water in 1998.
Mr Castillo started with the company’s predecessor in 1971 and was involved in construction of the first public water and wastewater systems in the Cayman Islands. He operated the company’s first desalination units and eventually was responsible for all company water production until 1990.
According to a company press release, he was not only a pioneer in Cayman’s water industry, but in the infant desalination industry.
Mr. Castillo was named project manager for the company’s 1991 West Bay Service Area expansion and was instrumental in piping West Bay.
He was promoted to operations manager (Cayman). At the time of his death, he was responsible for day-to-day management of all water production and distribution for the company.
Much of the success of the development of the tourism industry on Grand Cayman could not have occurred without the availability of piped drinking water. Mr. Castillo played a significant role in this success during his 30-plus years of service to the company, a spokesman said.
CWC chairman Jeff Parker and CWC president Rick McTaggart paid tribute to Mr. Castillo at the dedication ceremony, which was attended by employees and family members.
