Twenty-six students from 14 schools in Cayman were recently presented prizes for their winning essays in the 2004 Royal Commonwealth Society Essay Competition.
The awards were presented during a recent ceremony hosted by the Governor Mr. Bruce Dinwiddy and his wife Emma at their residence.
The essay competition is open to children from all over the Commonwealth. Last year, 5,300 students submitted entries.
Presentations were also made to the 12 winners of the local competition including the best overall in each age group, ranging from older students in Class A to the younger ones in Class D.
Stuart Gorter from St. Ignatius High School was the overall local winner, receiving the Elliott Cup.
The Rotary Club introduced the competition to Cayman in the early ’70s and Rotarian John Elliott took over the project in 1974 when he became the RCS Honorary Representative. It is currently organised by Charles Quin.
‘Through Mr. Elliott’s hard work, this competition has really grown. We now have more than 100 essays submitted each year, demonstrating the obvious talent and hard work of many of our students. They have all done extremely well and I offer them my warmest congratulations,’ said Mr. Quin.
He also thanked the Education Department for co-ordinating the competition both locally and in London, as well as Butterfield Bank, sponsor of the prizes.
