Sea swim dedicated to late David Foster

Cayman Islands’ swimmers were out in force on Saturday, September 17th, as a record 139 swim enthusiasts came out to Governor’s Beach to participate in the 21st Annual Foster’s Food Fair 800m sea swim. This year’s swim was dedicated to the memory of David Foster, who passed away earlier this year. The swim community showed its respect to Mr. Foster through a prayer led by Shane Foster, just prior to the start of the race.

Race conditions were near perfect with sunny skies and no wind, chop or current to slow Cayman’s age group swimmers as many participants blasted through their personal best times over the 800m distance. The top six places in the race unsurprisingly went to members of the Cayman Islands’ National swim-team with Joel Rombough taking first place honours in a time of 9 minutes 42 seconds, followed closely behind by fellow swim-team mates Brett Fraser, Jody Foster, Michael Lockwood, Brigitte Tomascik and Peter Stasiuk.

Two of Cayman’s hard-training triathletes dominated the Masters group with excellent performances by David Walker and Helga Sergel, who crossed the finish line in 10 minutes 22 seconds and 11 minutes 10 seconds respectively. Other notable Masters performances were put in by Mark Mathews, Marius Acker, Jackie Dowdle and Sally Rubner. All the swimmers were rewarded with T-shirts and enjoyed refreshments after the race, followed by the awards ceremony where ‘bobble-head’ trophies were handed out to the top-three male and female finishers in each age division by Woody Foster of Foster’s Food Fair.

The next Open Water Sea Swim on the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association’s calendar is the ‘CIASA 2-mile Sea Swim’, being held on Saturday, the 1st of October, 2005. Interested swimmers are urged to visit the official race web-site at www.caymanswimming.com for more on this race.
