Early childhood course begins

The objective of providing quality pre-school education for all children in the Cayman Islands is being advanced this weekend with the commencement of specialised training for all early-childhood workers.

The first group of 43 candidates will be trained in the Certificate Course for Early Childhood Practitioners, said a GIS press release. These workers represent 14 pre-schools and day care centres on Grand Cayman. Similar training is to take place on Cayman Brac in the near future.

The training is a joint initiative between the Ministry of Education and the Education Department, and the Cayman Islands Early Childhood Association. In April of this year the Early Childhood Care and Development Programme, which meets international standards, was adopted.

‘I am very pleased at this development, for all educators should be assisted in their professional development wherever possible,’ Education Minister Alden McLaughlin said in the release.

‘It is essential that we establish strong learning foundations for our children, and this long-awaited training programme should positively affect our country for many years to come.’

He further encouraged the corporate community to partner with these agencies, in order to effect the most effective development of this area.

The six to eight months of part-time training begins Saturday at the Savannah United Church’s conference room.
