Town Hall Road in West Bay rang with laughter, music and happy voices on Saturday, 3 September as more than 60 children enjoyed a Back To School Party at the Church of God Chapel.
Elizabeth Bowen, who led a team of eight volunteers in planning and carrying out the party, said that the children had their pick of everything from horseback riding, face painting and hoola hoops, to cotton candy, a rubber slide and a bouncing castle. Even some of the leaders, including Mrs. Bowen, went on the bouncing castle.
‘I love those kinds of things,’ she said.
There was also plenty of food and lots of games such as dodge ball, bobbing for apples and sack races to name a few.
‘It was a very good day,’ said to Crispin Myles, one of the volunteer leaders. ‘All the kids had fun. I felt like a kid again.’
Rev. Stanwyck Myles, pastor of the church, explained that the party was the result of collaboration between his congregation and Kathy Litteljohn-Foley – a former school counsellor in Cayman – and her mother. They wanted to do something for Cayman after the hurricane and were instrumental in raising US$400 from friends in Scotland.
Mr. Myles and Ms Litteljohn-Foley explored together what could best be done with the money and decided on a party for children.
Mr. Myles said although the church invested substantially more than the $400, it was worth it, noting the donation from Scotland prompted the whole endeavour and got the ball rolling.
‘I would like to say a big thank-you to our friends in Scotland, on behalf of the Cayman community and especially the children,’ said Rev. Myles. ‘Thanks also to the volunteers who worked hard to make this party possible.’
