BT dental clinic opens

Bodden Town’s first-ever dental clinic will open Monday, 26 September.

The Health Services Authority will be rotating staff from its George Town clinic and the Bodden Town facility will be open to patients from all districts.

Located at the Bodden Town District Health Centre, the clinic will be open 8.30am to 4pm from Tuesday to Friday, and to accommodate people’s work schedules, the clinic will stay open to 8pm on Monday, three hours later than its George Town counterpart.

Staff at the new clinic will also be especially sensitive to children’s needs, since going to the dentist can be a traumatic experience for the young.

Dr. Andrea Campbell will be treating children at Bodden Town, and they will be the primary focus on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, though adults can receive care those times, if needed. On Monday, Dr. Sean Childers will be the dentist at the clinic.

‘The Bodden Town clinic is important because it gives us a fixed place, a home as it were, for children. In addition, we can offer better access to dental care for children of the eastern districts.

‘But even if you’re from West Bay, you can come down. It’s for the whole country,’ Ms Campbell said.

She will also continue to be the visiting dentist for the schools during the days when she is not at the new clinic.

‘For the schools, I either work from referrals from the dental therapists or provide dental treatment for assigned classes,’ Ms Campbell said.

Helping children seems to come naturally to Ms Campbell.

‘I just happen to like children. My practice has evolved over the years. When I was practising in Trinidad, the other dentists didn’t want to deal with the children so they would send them to me.

‘Over the years here, I have seen children grow from middle school to high school and then graduating and that’s amazing. It’s a pleasure for me to watch them,’ she said.

Four schools have fixed dental clinics with a mobile unit available to visit the other schools.

A dental hygienist will be available by appointment in Bodden Town every Wednesday for cleanings and consultations.

Each week day, except for Wednesday, from 8.30am to 9.30am, there will be a walk-in emergency dental service for both adults and children.

In addition to the two dentists and dental hygienist who will be at the clinic on specific days, a receptionist and dental assistant will be working there fulltime.
