Teens causing concern at cinema

Teenagers – allegedly ‘lurking about’ – are causing concern outside Cayman’s cinema.

One parent who had recently been waiting to collect children after the show claimed to have spotted under age teenagers drinking alcohol outside.

‘While waiting I counted six under age teenagers drinking beer and two with rum bottles,’ the ‘very concerned’ parent told the Caymanian Compass in a letter.

‘These delinquents were lurking about outside the theatre and did not hide their booze in a paper bag.

‘They openly and very proudly displayed their disrespect of the law,’ the parent added.

A problem with teenagers in the area had been brought to the attention of the police, RCIP media liaison officer Maria McLean told the Compass.

The Uniform Support Group had regularly been in the area on Friday and Saturday nights, she said.

They had identified a problem with youngsters loitering but had not witnessed the under age drinking of any alcohol, she added.

PC McLean said USG officers had been detailed to visit the area, periodically make checks on the problem and to report back.

‘We are advising the parents of teenagers who attend the cinema on Friday and Saturday nights to be responsible,’ said PC McLean.

‘We would like them to come back and pick up their youngsters at the end of the show so they are not left loitering and don’t get tempted to get involved with anything that might be going on,’ she said.

‘The police want to encourage parents to be responsible and to know where their teenagers are and what they are doing,’ she added.
