Two major fundraising efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims have raised about CI$49,000.
From the beginning of September until now, about CI$28,000 has been deposited into a Butterfield Bank account set up for the Cayman Islands Red Cross, according to Jondo Obi, branch director.
The funds will be sent to the American Red Cross, which will then channel the money to where it is needed, she added.
‘The Cayman Islands Red Cross appreciates the public’s support, including schools and private businesses, who helped raise about CI$28,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and encourages members of the public to continue the spirit of helping others in need,’ she said.
Foster’s Food Fair was involved in helping Katrina victims in two separate efforts.
Woody Foster, of Foster’s Food Fair, explained his company’s involvement.
‘We donated two containers of water through our supplier in the US to distribute to supermarkets over there for donation to the needy.
‘We received a lot of help from our US suppliers and vendors after Ivan so we thought it was the right thing to do,’ Mr. Foster said.
Both Rooster 101 and Z99 also helped with fundraising for Katrina, according to Nicole Lalum, marketing director of Hurley’s Entertainment.
‘We set up booths for Rooster at Hurley’s and Z99 at Foster’s at The Strand. We were there for six hours on 3 September and collected US$25,527.24,’ she said.
The money was wired directly to the American Red Cross through Butterfield Bank, with the transfer fee waived, Ms Lalum added.
Mr. Foster was pleased by the public’s reaction to that fundraiser.
‘It’s good to see so many people in our community giving back, even so soon after our own devastation,’ he said.
The account numbers for the Katrina Relief Fund are still active, Ms Lalum explained. Anyone wishing to donate can do so at any of the bank’s branches into CI$ account #02-201-037138 or US$ account #01-201-037138.
