Pirates invade

Cannons boomed and smoke filled the air as swashbuckling pirates invaded George Town Saturday, kicking off Pirates Week festivities.

Hundreds lined the streets to take in the annual landing pageant, a mock invasion complete with old-time sailing vessels, elaborate sword fights and the staged kidnapping of the Governor and his wife.

Many spectators got into the spirit of the day by dressing up as plundering pirates and wenches.

The day’s festivities included a colourful street parade along with the trial of the pirates, a slapstick showpiece that has the invading pirates tried for taking the Governor hostage and banished from the island.
