Saving New Year’s

New Year in the Cayman Islands is saved! One simple step means that we can celebrate New Year at midnight, complete with countdown, balloon drop, and whatever drink we prefer – and ministers and pastors will not be concerned because there will be no intrusion into the Sabbath.

How? By anyone so inclined putting their clocks forward by one hour at 10pm on Saturday, 31 December. Then enjoy the arrival of the New Year at midnight (which is really 11pm Cayman Government time). Thirty minutes later everyone goes home, and the restaurants, clubs and pubs are empty in complete accordance with Sunday observance requirements.

Can we put the entertainment clocks forward by one hour? Absolutely! Nations worldwide alter their clocks twice a year -including our sovereign mother country, Great Britain. And it happens with the tacit approval of the Queen, her ministers and church leaders everywhere. Even dates are put forward, and back, on the International Date Line.
