Monique Myers qualifies for CARIFTA

On a cool, windy Saturday morning, Monique Myers calmly tossed the Shot Put 10.56m to surpass the qualifying standard for consideration to be selected to this year’s Carifta Games Championships in Quadeloupe and in so doing highlighted the performances at the 2006 West Bay District Meet held at the John A. Cumber Primary School field this past Saturday.

On a day in which Athletes battled the cool of the morning and a strong head wind, Track & Field returned to West Bay as the Cayman Islands Athletic Association kicked off its program of staging Athletic Meets away from the Truman Bodden Complex and taking the sports to the Districts.

Myers’ achievement was almost matched by Andrew Bodden who threw the Shot Put 12.49m in the Boys U17 competition to be marginally short of the qualifying standard.

Chantelle Morrison, Ashleigh Nalty and David Holness continued their winning ways at the Meet by taking the ‘double’. Morrison again outclassed the 10-13 Girls in the 100m by taking the same in a time of 14.00secs before competing in the higher 14-16 category where she held off the very game challenge of Jahzenia Thomas in 30.50secs; Nalty took the 10-13 Girls Long Jump with an impressive leap of 4.21m and then romped home in the 200m clocking 31.50secs. Holness took the Boys 10-13 100m in a close up finish with Wesley Robinson with both returning times of 14.40secs, he then had to chase down a very impressive Justin Nalty in the 200m overhauling him in the last ten metres of the race and then holding on to win in a time of 30.00secs. Richie Hanson also completed a double by taking the Boys 17-19 100m and 800m in modest times.

The Men’s Open 100m saw a very impressive run by Wallace Little who fought off the strong head wind and a game Christopher Sampson to win in 11.90secs. Much is anticipated if and when he matches up with Samuel Brevett and Keswick Wright over this distance.
