Northward inmates excel in football

At last year’s CIFA annual awards ceremony, it was prison football team, HMP United that won the 2005 fair play award for discipline on the field of play.

To many this came as a surprise, but not to the team, said principal officer Richard Barton, the officer in charge of the side.

Despite not being able to win a single game, the lads gave a good account of themselves, as far as discipline and behaviour is concerned, according to a press release.

Mr. Barton said he has been working with the inmates for quite some time and that all they really need is someone to guide them in the right direction.

The prison establishment is strict with the players, who are drug tested before each game, said the release.

They must also maintain good order and discipline in the prison establishment in order to be a part of the team, it added.

The team also participated in the recent Masters League and managed to show themselves capable of the task by defeating Welly’s Cool Spot, George Town, East End and Bodden Town. But they could not get past Scholars in the first round of the knockout.

After a hard fought game against the Cayman Islands Fire Service, Prison were crowned champions when they defeated the Fire Service 4-2 to claim the National Drug Council SOY (Save Our Youth) football championship.
