A stray kitten, lovingly given a home by a caring couple, was apparently killed by an unknown attacker who broke its neck.
Melissa Perkins and fiance Sean Ladley were heartbroken when Sean found their treasured three-month-old black kitten named ‘Thing’ dead near their home in Tropical Gardens.
Thing, picked up as a stray on Seven Mile Beach when he was only weeks old, lived with four other cats in a special, screened cattery.
But his lifeless body was found the morning after he somehow managed to escape.
‘He was obviously dead and it was obvious his neck was broken,’ Melissa told the Caymanian Compass.
‘We don’t know for certain what happened but there was no sign of any altercation with a dog or anything,’ she said.
‘The vet said if there was an animal attack there were normally signs of it such as other injuries,’ she said.
The couple feel there is little chance of finding out exactly what happened to Thing but have reported the matter to the animal welfare officer.
And Melissa said they have been assured that inquiries will be made in the area and the matter followed up.
‘We want to feel that our cats are safe in our neighbourhood,’ Melissa told the Compass.
‘Intuitively I think he was killed,’ said Melissa.
‘There was no evidence of any animal getting him. It was pouring with rain that night and there were no dogs around and nothing he could have fallen from,’ she said.
‘The whole thing is very odd and I don’t understand it,’ said Melissa.
‘It’s also very sad. Thing was a happy little cat,’ said Melissa.
‘It makes me afraid that if the cats get out that they are not safe. Our main concern is that we want them to be safe.’
