Math, Science on offer this week

Grand Cayman’s Maths and Science Exhibition takes place from today until Saturday.

Schools will display their mathematics and science projects in their classrooms and halls.

Selected projects will be displayed at the Mary Miller Hall on Saturday, states a GIS press release.

The second phase of the Maths Competition – the oral contest, one of the most popular events in the competition – will take place Tuesday and Wednesday.

Twelve finalists from George Town, John A. Cumber, Red Bay, Bodden Town and Creek Primary Schools and Cayman Brac High School will take part in the Junior Competition Tuesday.

On Wednesday, 12 finalists from Grace Christian Academy, John Gray, George Hicks and Cayman Brac High Schools will participate in the Senior Competition.

Sponsored by the Fidelity Group of Companies, these friendly competitions will be held at the John Gray High School Library, and will entail individual computation and problem-solving tasks.

This month’s maths events are part of a national Mathematics Awareness Campaign that involves all government schools. Private schools are also invited to participate. During classroom lessons, students are being encouraged to explore a range of activities – from story-writing and acting to designing clothes and art projects, competing in mathematics competitions, and exploring the lives of great mathematicians.

Science, as a related subject, will also be a part of the programme of activities.

The Education Department’s sponsorship of maths and science activities in schools this month aims to increase interest and involvement of students, parents and teachers of government and private schools.

Activities will culminate in the National Mathematics Day observance Thursday and the Mathematics Fair and Science Exhibition on Saturday. Students may wear their Maths Day T-shirts to school on Friday and to the Mathematics Fair on Grand Cayman on the following day.

The Maths Fair takes place from 10am to 3pm Saturday at Mary Miller Hall, adjacent to the Lighthouse School in Red Bay. Parents and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

The Inventions Competition, sponsored by Fidelity, will also be judged at the exhibition on Saturday.

Maths Fair activities will include music, computer activities, refreshments, maths quizzes, and a variety of entertaining learning experiences. Gate prizes include a Giant Food Hamper donated by Foster’s Food Fair and an airline ticket donated by Cayman Airways.
