Police clamp down on road offences

Police turned up the heat on driving offences over the weekend, issuing more than 50 tickets.

During a series of operations carried out by the Traffic Department on Friday, 37 traffic tickets were issued for offences such as failing to display a proper licence and defective lights. Police also handed out nine speeding tickets.

One vehicle was seized after the driver tried to avoid a roadblock. He ran from his vehicle which had not been licensed for two years, said a RCIP press release.

Two people were warned for driving without insurance and having an expired licence coupon and four production slips were issued.

‘Operations such as this send a clear message to the community that police officers are out there making sure people are abiding by the law,’ said Police Commissioner Stuart Kernohan.

Additionally, over the weekend a number of people were arrested for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

On Friday at approximately 12.30am police were called to a one-vehicle accident at Larkspur Way off Crewe Road. The driver from West Bay was charged with driving under the influence.

At around 11.30pm on Saturday a member of the public reported to the 911 Emergency Communication Centre that a pick-up truck was driving erratically. Police located the vehicle on West Bay Road and the 43-year-old driver was arrested for driving under the influence. The man has been released on bail.

Half an hour later, police were alerted to a one-vehicle accident at the roundabout by the Galleria Plaza. The driver, a 32-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and was released on bail while investigations continue.
