Fundraiser a big success

The Cayman Brac and Little Cayman chapter of the Cayman Islands Red Cross walk/run/bike-a-thon raised more than CI$2,200 for the Sister Islands’ disaster relief fund.

The event enjoyed a great turnout with 17 Red Cross volunteers decked out in Red Cross shirts ready to walk from the Brac Museum to Cayman National Bank. Two volunteers, Andre and Lennette Scott, met the challenge on bicycles. It was clear from the beginning that Red Cross volunteers Barry Morgan and Jose’ Zalaya would set a quick pace as they out-distanced the other walkers in short order.

Red Cross volunteer Mike Nye drove the course with first aid kits and water in order to keep the walkers hydrated and safe.

The event, held 27 June, was a great success and everyone enjoyed the outing. In addition to those mentioned, other participants included Isolina Aguirre, Gwendolyn Bodden, Joyce Carter, Arlyne Del Rosario, Janet Gazzingan, Hedy Grant, Ann Morgan, Judy Nye, Janna Parchman, Maria Robinson, Alberta Scott, and Elida Scott.

The Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Chapter of Cayman Islands Red Cross was re-established in 2005 after being inactive for many years. Membership quickly soared to more than 60 volunteers from the Sister Islands.

The Cayman Brac and Little Cayman Chapter is committed to disaster planning, literacy mentoring, elderly visitation, health and safety training and fundraising for disaster relief.

Future plans include a centre of operations on the bluff, as well as community classes in CPR, first aid and babysitting.
