Group donates school supplies

Members of the Portfolio of Finance and Economics’ Social and Welfare Committee had discussed for some time how they could give back to the community.

Recognising the importance of early childhood education, and the positive impact of assisting children especially at the beginning of the school year, the committee decided to donate school supplies to the Department of Children and Family Services.

‘We knew that being a small committee of fewer than 30 employees, what we could collect would be limited,’ Felicia Deslandes, who chairs the committee, said in a press release.

‘Nevertheless, we were able to gather hundreds of items, including exercise books, and pens and pencils, as well as numerous crayons, glue sticks, folders, markers, erasers, rulers and sharpeners.’

Finance staff members contributed to the donation either by purchasing items or by giving money – in some cases, as much as $50. Committee members purchased many of the items at Foster’s Food Fair, which also made a generous donation once its management became aware of the cause.

Ms Deslandes contacted DCFS to arrange delivery of the items in late August, in time for the start of the school year.

‘We are very grateful to the portfolio staff for their gesture, and hope that others in the community would emulate their efforts,’ said Verna Hunte, supervisor of the George Town District Office of DCFS, who received the supplies.

‘These items will make a big difference in the lives of many of the children in our programmes throughout the districts, as the supplies with be shared between the three district offices.’
