Boatswain’s Beach, the new home of the Cayman Turtle Farm, will host the annual turtle release on Thursday at Seven Mile Beach, Public Beach location, next to Calico Jack’s.
The event is set to begin at 5pm. This year 20 yearlings will be introduced to the wild and 20 lucky contestants will have the opportunity to release one of the green sea turtles into its natural habitat, said a press release from Boatswain’s Beach.
The Cayman Turtle Farm is the world’s only breeding farm of green sea turtles with approximately 1200 turtles. Four hundred of the residents at the farm are proven breeders and produce live hatchlings.
‘The three main goals of the turtle farm are conservation, research and utilisation. The objective is to produce enough turtles to supply the needs of the local market, preserving local traditions such as turtle meat as a main food staple, while still supporting conservation, research and continuing the release programme,’ said the press release.
‘Last year’s event brought 3,000 eager and excited locals and visitors to one location to join the fun.’
Boatswain’s Beach invites members of the public to have an opportunity to play a part in conservation by entering the raffle to win a chance to release one of this year’s turtles. The drawing will take place on today at 3pm and each winner will be contacted no later than 5pm of that day.
Each winning participant will have the opportunity to walk a turtle down the beach, and place him in the water near the shoreline.
To participate in the release drop by Boatswain’s Beach and place your name in the raffle box in the Reception Building. For any further information on the turtle release please contact Calicia Burke at [email protected] or 949-3894.
