And then there were four! The quarterfinals of the 2006/2007 CUC Primary Football League are history as the large crowd that gathered at the Annex Field this past Saturday, witnessed a spectacular showcase of young talent. With two games being played simultaneously, there was no shortage of excitement as many games were truly riveting to watch. The best is yet to come as the winners return to the Annex for the semifinals this Saturday, January 13 to battle it out once again to see which lucky teams advance to the finals.
In the U-11 Champions Cup, reigning champions John A. Cumber survived an early scare as they found themselves uncharacteristically behind 2-1 to an enthusiastic Triple C team. Showing that true championship grit, the boys from the west fought back and eventually ran out 5-2 winners. Their opponents this Saturday, Cayman Prep, defeated a stubborn Savannah Primary 3-0. On the other side of the draw, undefeated Prospect Primary faced a tough Bodden Town Primary team who led 2-1 at halftime before Prospect Primary rallied the troops and squeezed through 4-3. Prospect Primary meet St. Ignatius Prep in the semifinals after St. Ignatius defeated Red Bay Primary 2-1.
In the U-11 Consolation Cup, East End Primary emerged victorious in the ‘Battle of the East’ as they survived a thrilling penalty shoot-out against North Side Primary. Truth For Youth tasted success for the first time this season as they outlasted the Golden Eagles from First Baptist 2-0. In the semifinals, East End Primary plays Cayman International School and Truth For Youth does battle with Grace Wesleyan.
In the U-9 Champions Cup, champions John A. Cumber Primary blanked George Town Primary 6-0; Savannah Primary outlasted Cayman Prep 2-1; Bodden Town Primary blasted Grace Wesleyan 7-1; and undefeated Prospect Primary overcame Cayman International School 3-2 on penalties. This weekend, John A. Cumber Primary meets Savannah Primary while Prospect Primary faces Bodden Town Primary.
Although not featuring in this past weekend’s fixtures, the U-9 Consolation Cup semifinals pit St. Ignatius Prep against Triple C and Truth For Youth face Red Bay Primary.
If this Saturday’s games are anything like this past weekend’s encounters, spectators are in for a special treat. From the powerhouse match-ups of John A. Cumber Primary against Cayman Prep and Prospect Primary versus St. Ignatius Prep, to the supposedly ‘not-so-physical’ encounters between the likes of Truth For Youth and Grace Wesleyan, those making the trek to the Annex Field will experience a truly entertaining day of youth football at its best. After all, this is ‘the powerful game!’ Onto the semifinals.
