NS market hit again

Burglars broke into Chisholm’s Supermarket on Cayman’s North Side late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

The thefts come little more than a month after police said a suspected robber took money and cigarettes from the store while allegedly holding an employee at gunpoint.

A robbery and a theft inside of five weeks is a disturbing trend for the small family-owned business on the normally quiet North Side. Part-owner Edward Chisholm said in the past 20 years, the store has been robbed or burglarised perhaps half a dozen times.

‘It seems like more lately than in the past,’ said Mr. Ebanks. ‘Naturally, there’s a concern especially with what we had here (in January)…that’s very frightening.’

Two arrests have been made in connection with the 19 January heist which occurred on a Friday afternoon. No one was injured, but the suspects did manage to evade police capture for several days.

Mr. Ebanks said the overnight break-in this week was fairly minor, but said the store did have to shut down for about three hours while police investigated the crime scene.

‘Very little is missing; just a few coins, maybe a few bottles of soda, couple packs of cigarettes, a bottle of water…that’s about all we can tell at this point,’ he said.

Mr. Ebanks said the store closed about 8pm Tuesday, and the burglary was discovered around 7am Wednesday when his sister Erena arrived to open up.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service concurred that the incident was minor, but a spokesperson said officers would take it as seriously as any other crime.

No arrests had been made at press time, and Mr. Ebanks noted that the store does not use surveillance cameras either inside or outside.

‘That’s something we’ll be looking at now,’ he said. ‘That’s what you call hindsight, right?’
