Another American diver has died in Grand Cayman’s waters.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said the 57-year-old man was found floating unconscious in the sea by Sunset Divers’ staff late Sunday afternoon.
‘We got the call at five ’till five, and found the guy about 20 after five,’ said Mike Pinnington with Sunset Divers. ‘We were the first vessel on the scene, and we tried to revive him without success.’
The victim, who was from Georgetown, Texas, had gone on a dive at Smith Cove with six other people and was reported missing around 4:30pm.
After being spotted in the water, the man was taken to a nearby submarine dock and was then transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said the victim had been vacationing in Grand Cayman with family and friends.
Sunday’s incident occurred exactly a week after another American diver was found floating in the waters off Cayman’s East End.
The 71-year-old victim in that case was on a 100 foot dive.
In January, two watersports-related deaths occurred here on the same day. The first involved a 54 year old American diver who died on a shore dive near the Sunset House resort. The other victim was a 71 year old Korean national who was found floating in the water near the Sandbar.
The average age of the men who died in the four incidents was 63.
Last year, 10 people were killed in watersports related activities in the Cayman Islands. Three were divers, seven were snorkelers; eight were Americans, all but one of the victims was over 48 years old.
