With outstanding attendance and participation over a week of activities from 25February to 3 March, Cayman’s scouts celebrated what was described as their most successful Scout Week ever, at a time when they also commemorated the 100th anniversary of the scouting movement.
Starting off with the Founder’s Day Service at First Baptist Church, a large gathering of Scouts, Leaders, members of the Guiding Fraternity and parents assembled to pay tribute to and give thanks for the life and work of founder Lord Baden-Powell. The service was attended by Alden McLaughlin minister with responsibility for Youth Affairs and Chief Officer Angela Martins, said a press release.
Other activities during the week included group socials, community service projects, a basketball tournament and grand finale, the annual camp fire.
George Town Scout Troop gave the grounds of Cayman Prep & High School a facelift when they undertook a general cleaning up their community day project.
The Savannah Scouts worked at the Sav/New Playfield and West Bay Scouts visited the residents at the Golden Age Home. Other groups did their service at the regular meeting place.
In the basketball tournament held 2 March, defending champions West Bay took the winnings in both the Cub Scout and Senior Scout divisions for the second straight year and retained the Val Anderson Championship Trophy.
George Town Scout group was in second place in both the Scouts and Cub-Scouts sections followed by the Savannah Scouts in third place.
Scout Week ended with a grand campfire celebration at the Savannah-Newlands Playfield on Saturday, 3 March.
Executive Commissioner of Scouts, Winston Hayle, commended the Scouts and their families for supporting the events.
‘The attendance and participation of Scouts and their families at all events was very encouraging and contributed in a big way to a very enjoyable and successful Scout Week. It is clear from this week’s activities that scouting is alive and well and is helping to improve the discipline and teamwork among our young people,’ he stated.
This year’s Scout Week saw the participation of a new group of Cub Scouts, who were inducted into Scouting on 19 February, as members of the George Town scout pack. Eight new members joined just in time to enjoy their first Scout Week activities.
Mr. Hayle called for continued support of upcoming Scout activities, which includes a music concert on 21 April to raise funds to send Cayman Scouts to the World Jamboree of Scouts this July in Chelmsford, England.
