Officer, dogs struck by car

A Royal Cayman Islands Police officer was hospitalised with head injuries this weekend after he was struck by a car Friday night.
An RCIPS spokesperson said PC Paul Dewing was out walking his two dogs at around 9.30pm when he was hit by a green Honda Accord on Pedro Castle Rd.
The two dogs, one of which was a police K-9 German Shepherd, were also injured in the accident.
Officer Dewing’s injuries were said to be serious. However, he was in stable condition when airlifted to a Miami hospital on Saturday afternoon. The two animals were receiving treatment and were expected to recover.
The 911 Emergency Communications Centre was alerted to the accident by a man who said he had hit someone. Investigators said that man was still on the scene of the crash when police arrived. He gave a statement to officers, and took a breathalyzer test.
“There was no trace of him being drunk,” said RCIPS spokesperson Deborah Denis. “They do have street lights over there. It wasn’t pitch black. At this time, there’s no reason to arrest the driver.”
The motorist is believed to be a local man, but he was not identified by police.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to contact Sgt. Frank Owens at the George Town police station (949-4222), or PC Brian Jameson at the Traffic Department (946-6254).
