Red Sail Sports is celebrating 20 successful years in the Cayman Islands.
Now operational in several islands throughout the Caribbean and Hawaii, the founding company in Cayman remains the flagship enterprise and continues to grow and service visitors to Grand Cayman.
The watersports and retail operator was established in 1987 by prominent local businessmen Mr. Attlee Bodden and Mr. Adrien Briggs, under the guidance of Operations Manager Mr. Rod McDowall.
It was set up to complement the Hyatt Regency Beach Resort, which also opened at that time.
‘Adrien and Attlee saw the need to provide an upscale dive and watersports operation for the hotel’s guests,’ said Mr. McDowall.
The initial operation had just 25 employees, two dive boats, water surfing and sailing equipment, beach toys and one small sundry store, with the first catamaran arriving some months later.
‘The business was an immediate success; we set new standards in the dive and watersports industry in the Cayman Islands and were well received,’ said Mr. McDowall.
Red Sail Sports quickly moved to other locations as the company’s excellent reputation spread.
Red Sail Sports supplies services to all major hotels on Seven Mile Beach as well as having locations at Morrit’s Tortuga Club and Rum Point.
Even Hurricane Ivan in 2004 could not dampen Red Sail’s ability to support the tourism industry. Through a dedicated effort by all staff the company was soon in full swing offering all services to visitors.
The company now has 135 employees, eight retail outlets selling beach resort wear and watersports activities, which can be enjoyed by all family members.
‘We are a one-stop shop for visitors,’ said Mr. McDowall.
The fun includes scuba diving around Cayman’s famed reefs and Mr. McDowall is proud to point out that they average 2000 resort instruction courses a year.
Red Sail also has sailing trips to Stingray City and the Sandbar, catamaran sunset cruises, dinner cruises and glass-bottom boat snorkelling trips.
Other activities include banana boat rides, water skiing and parasailing, while you can hire Sunsearcher foam floats, Waverunners, Aquatrike, and paddle boats.
Red Sail Sports has also developed a division for destination management services, which caters for large incentive travel groups coming to the island.
Red Sail also realises its responsibility to the community.
‘As a successful local company, the owners and management have recognised the importance of giving back to the community and have been strong supporters of youth sports and school programs. Little League softball, the Stingray Swim Club and CIASA along with the Lighthouse School are amongst the groups the company support,’ said Mr. McDowall.
The company’s Cayman headquarters is at Coconut Plaza on West Bay Road.
‘It has been a wonderful 20 years with many challenges and many successes,” said Mr. McDowall. ‘Having established our high standards in 1987, none of this could have been possible without our staff who works so hard. We are not complacent, however, and look forward to improving the services we currently offer. We also look forward to working with new and repeat visitors as well as all the companies in Cayman with whom we do business and who are part of our continuing success story. I wish to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their support over the years.’
