Man arrested after stabbing

A woman was fatally stabbed Monday night inside a home along Mount Pleasant Road in West Bay in what appears to be a case of domestic violence.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the stabbing. He turned himself in at the West Bay police station the night of the killing.

Royal Cayman Islands Police officers were called to the home at the corner of Erenette Lane and Mount Pleasant Road at around 10pm Monday. A woman there had called 911 after she found her neighbour inside lying in a pool of blood.

Investigators said the 34-year-old victim, identified by neighbours who only knew her first name as ‘Murine,’ had been stabbed several times. She was taken to hospital were she was pronounced dead.

It was not clear at press time when the killing actually occurred. Next door neighbours said they heard nothing from the house until police cars and ambulances showed up.

‘I got a call from someone asking me if I was okay,’ said Dabian McCarthy, who owns the apartment building next door to the crime scene. ‘So I looked out, saw two ambulances, three police cars and about a dozen police officers.’

Mr. McCarthy’s wife, Joan, said the couple who lived at the home where the incident occurred Monday night had moved to Cayman after Hurricane Ivan. She said the man worked as a carpenter and a handyman; the woman worked as a sales clerk.

No charges had been filed against the suspect as of press time. It is Caymanian Compass policy not to release the names of criminal suspects until they are formally charged.

The West Bay stabbing left neighbours shocked, but most said they still felt safe in the area.

‘It doesn’t get to us,’ Mrs. McCarthy said.

‘My father was killed here 32 years ago,’ said Mr. McCarthy, a life-long West Bayer. ‘But it hasn’t run me out.’

The killing is the second which has occurred in the Cayman Islands so far this year.

The first happened 1 June on Courts Road in George Town. In that incident, police have charged 73-year-old Windell Dilbert with murdering former RCIPS officer Michael Ebanks in the home the two shared.
