Chilli Cook-off rejoins Taste of Cayman

Wondering what happened to the annual Chilli Cook-off, usually held on Constitution Day?

Well, chilli lovers, don’t worry because you haven’t missed it. The contest has simply been moved to a new date.

Now in its 20th year, the contest is part of the annual food festival, Taste of Cayman, and, like TofC will now be held in October.

TofC moved from its original July date to October in 2006, however, TofC Chairperson and Chief Chilli-head Mike Flowers chose not to change the Chilli Cook-off date last year.

This year, Mr. Flowers has had a change of heart.

‘We decided in the end to move it to October, to keep the whole festivities of Taste of Cayman together,’ he said.

The contest regularly attracts up to 25 teams, vying to cook-up the best tasting chilli for a coveted place in the international Chilli Cook-off festival, held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The only drawback to the new date will be the length of time winners will wait to try their luck in the international contest. The Las Vegas contest is held in October.

‘It will just mean contestants will require a good memory to remember their winning recipe for a whole year,’ Mr. Flowers said.
