St. Matthew’s is tops

This letter is in response to a Cayman Net News article in its 31 July, 2007, edition regarding the medical school proposed for Cayman Brac.

St. Matthew’s University School of Medicine was established by physicians with a goal of providing a medical education of the highest quality based on solid principles and integrity. We are pleased and honoured to be located on Grand Cayman, as the school has benefited greatly from being located in such a beautiful, hospitable and advanced setting.

We have received the support of the people and government of the Cayman Islands and such support has been instrumental to our success.

The concerns expressed by Dr. Paul Jung regarding offshore medical schools are unfounded in regard to St. Matthew’s University.

Under the auspices of the government of the Cayman Islands, St. Matthew’s is accredited by the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine.

The standards that are used to accredit St. Matthew’s University are endorsed by the United States Department of Education and are comparable to the standards of US Medical Schools.

St Matthew’s University offers students a medical education programme focused on patient-centred care as the foundation of the program.

The medical education is integrated with the world class health care system the Cayman Islands provides its population.

Our students enjoy US Medical Licensing Examination pass rates that are on parity with students from US medical schools and far above the average level of students from other non-US schools.

Our graduates are placed in outstanding residency programmes, including recent placements at the Mayo Clinic, Northwestern University, the University of Florida, Maine Medical Center and Vanderbilt University.

Unfortunately, there are other, less successful offshore medical schools that do have some of the problems outlined by Dr. Paul Jung.

With the support of the Cayman Islands, St. Matthew’s University is proud to distinguish itself by providing high quality medical education and by being dedicated to the success of our students from around the world.
