A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with stealing a live turtle from West Bay public beach last week.
The suspect, whose name the Caymanian Compass is withholding because he has not been formally charged, was also arrested for a string of recent burglaries in West Bay.
The 350-pound green sea turtle was found Thursday morning tied up in a wheelbarrow in a yard in West Bay. Department of Environment officers said it appeared the turtle had just come ashore to lay her eggs on public beach that morning.
Officials were able to save the turtle and return it to the sea later that day.
DoE officers said it appeared the turtle, one of just 10 green turtles still believed to be nesting here in Cayman, was about to be slaughtered when it was found.
