Students from George Town Primary – Vania Cornwall and Nathan Reid – are proving that saving the world’s fragile ecosystem really can start in your own backyard.
According to the Ritz Carlton, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment programme recently invited students from George Town Primary to compete for a scholarship to attend the Ambassador Summer Camp.
The programme, for children aged eight to 12-years-old, received nine entries from the school and two winners were chosen by a panel from The Ritz-Carlton.
10-year-old Vania Cornwall submitted ‘Saving our Ecosystem’ and eight-year-old Nathan Reid submitted ‘Nesting Time.’
The seven other students were recognised for their creative efforts and were invited to participate in one of the many activities offered by the interactive educational programme.
‘The creativity and variety of media these kids submitted was beyond anything that we expected,’ said Ambassadors of the Environment Supervisor Sarah Agnolin.
‘All of us at AOTE were so blown away that casting our votes was difficult, and in the end we awarded each student that entered with an Ambassadors of the Environment activity with us.’
The Ambassadors of the Environment summer camp opened its doors to local campers on 2 July and finishes 31 August.
Each week of camp has a theme, such as Sea Turtle Discovery week where participants learn about all there is to know sea turtles, even searching out turtle nests and helping with the sea turtle tracking programme.
In addition, campers enjoy snorkelling and underwater photography, kayaking in the ocean or through the mangroves, hiking, community projects, team building activities, climbing on our 28 foot rock wall, eco-based activities and games, art projects and field trips.
Each week also features a visit from a local artisan or biologist as well as two afternoons of coaching and play at The Courts, the Nick Bollettieri designed tennis centre at the resort.
All Ambassadors of the Environment programmes are open to the public and six activities are offered each day. For more information on the AOTE schedule or Ambassador Camp, call 815-6120.
