Cancer survivors were celebrated this past weekend at the Celebrate Life! Tea Party held on at the Marriott Resort’s Orchid Ballroom on Cayman’s National Cancer Survivor Day Saturday.

The event was hosted by Bosom Buddies, Cayman’s support group for breast cancer survivors, the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens.
With a strong turnout, the event was the first such tea party held since 2004, and organisers hope it will mark the rejuvenation of the efforts to support and encourage cancer survivors in the Cayman Islands.
‘While some of the people here may know each other, a lot of these cancer survivors have not met others who have gone through a similar experience, and our hope is that we can bring them together through events like this,’ said Fiona Nicol, a member of the event’s organizing team.
‘A lot of time has passed since the last Survivor’s Tea, and hopefully we can help this community reconnect,’ said fellow organizer Sharon Kelly.
New survivors were photographed and bios taken for inclusion on the survivors’ wall installation, which was brought from its usual location at the George Town Hospital especially for the event.
As a gesture of hope and growth, survivors were also gifted with a shoot of lucky bamboo intended to flourish with them at home as they make the journey of survival.
The tea featured music by Burman Scott, Blake Hurlston, an inspiring recital by the Cayman National Choir and Rebekah Jefferson. The audience was also treated to a performance by the George Town Primary Dancers, whose colourful costumes and youthful energy were a welcome addition.
