Strong currents pulled three snokellers out to sea in the South Sound area Wednesday evening, forcing one of them to cling to a buoy until he was rescued by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Marine Unit.
The 37-year-old man was conscious and unhurt when located by RCIPS vessels Typhoon and Enforcer One.
The other two men managed to swim back to shore by going all the way around the reef at Sand Quay.
‘They couldn’t have picked a worse place,’ said Department of Environment Chief Enforcement Officer Ladner Watler. ‘They swam around and came on the inside of the reef. They had the reef between them and shore.’
‘They did pretty good, but they were lucky, very lucky.’
Mr. Watler said an ambulance checked out the men after they went back to shore, but they were not injured.
