The popular Pirates Week 10K race will be hitting the West Bay Road this year with the usual age groups, and the usual 7am start on Sunday 18 November at the Governor’s Beach entrance. The race, which attracts many overseas runners , has been growing in popularity and drew 434 participants last year.
Kenneth Krys, Managing Director of Krys & Associates, sponsor of the race this year, said his company was keen to support an event which reflects the diversity that the Festival has become known for and which is strongly supported. Said Mr. Krys: ‘We’re proud to sponsor the 5th year of the 10K race and to be part of the exciting 30th anniversary of Pirates Week. This is an event that amplifies the Caymanian spirit, while giving all residents and visitors to the Islands an opportunity to have some fun.’
The race begins at 7am at the Governor’s Beach Entrance on West Bay, proceeds north to Town Hall Road, to Hell Road, turns around at Devil’s Hangout, and returns to finish at the Marriott Courtyard. Water stops will be provided along the way by Evian.
Runners will receive awards in Male and Female categories as follows: Overall; U19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60+. The entry fee is $25, and both residents and visitors are eligible. Registration for the race will take place at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel from noon to 5pm on Saturday 18 November. Race organiser Jerry Harper is reminding runners that there will be no race-day registration for the event.
The awards ceremony and a post-race breakfast will take place at the Marriott Courtyard.
Pirates Week Executive Director Dave Martins stressed the importance of sponsors to fund the events offered in the Festival. ‘Pirates Week is a very high priority for the Ministry of Tourism,’ said Mr. Martins, ‘but it’s also important that we get private sector support from companies such as Krys & Associates. It’s gratifying to see businesses giving something back to the Festival which boosts the economic climate here in so many ways.’
