Two Cayman Islands residents, including a Royal Cayman Islands Police officer, were killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday night in the Miami area.
The victims were identified by the Dade County Medical Examiner’s office as 26-year-old Jacqueline Jackson, and 30-year-old Duane Seymore. Florida police records indicated Mr. Seymore’s last name was actually spelled ‘Seymour’ but no clarification was available by press time.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the accident happened just before 10pm eastern time on Thursday night along the Dolphin Expressway south-east of Miami International Airport.
The 1999 Suzuki motorcycle the two rode on was exiting the expressway westbound at Lejune Road when police said the driver, Mr. Seymour, lost control of the vehicle for unknown reasons.
Corporal James Card with the highway patrol said the motorcycle struck a concrete support on the vehicle’s right side while travelling along the exit ramp. Both the driver and Ms Jackson flew off the elevated ramp and landed on another exit ramp below it.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Card said it appeared neither person was wearing safety helmets.
Florida police had not determined a cause of the accident by press time. As is standard policy in one-vehicle fatal accidents in Miami-Dade County, investigators said an autopsy would be performed on the driver to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the incident.
The RCIPS confirmed Ms Jackson was an officer with the police service, but declined to release further details.
