Latinos fight back to stop Bodden Town in Digicel Cup

Latinos had to come from behind and dig deep to beat a physically fit and improved Bodden Town in the first game of the 2007-2008 season of the Cayman Island Football Association (CIFA) Digicel Cayman Cup competition which kicked off at the Northside playing field last Saturday evening.

Latinos will advance to the next round.

Edgar Andino and George Belcher scored for Latinos while Kareem James netted in the 54th for Bodden Town.

Latinos came out very confident after whipping young Bodden Town 7-0 in their league encounter recently but were shocked as Bodden town rose to the occasion and gave them hard played first half keeping their defenders on their feet and the crowd of Football lovers were entertained and kept at the edge of their seats.

During the first half the combination of the hard running brothers Thomas and Theron Wood dismantled the defence line of the Latinos team and kept Goal keeper Reve Alexi extremely busy.

Bodden Town took full control of the game and with a few of Latinos key players out on injury appeared helpless. The first forty five minutes ended 0-0.

At the start of the second half Latinos came out with a different game plan. However, the youngsters were not afraid and continued to launch the attack on their senior opponents.

This effort was rewarded in the 54th minute when from a build up on the left flank exhibiting the skills of the Wood brothers a pass was made to James who eluded the defence line and with Goal keeper Reve Alexi alone to beat slipped it in to the back of the net.

They continued to hold their own with Latinos trying desperately to advance to goal, the youngsters were keen on advancing to the next round and would have none of it.

The game changed in the second half after Bodden Town’s Coach Elbert McLean substituted Gerome Graham for Joseph Welcome. This change only welcomed Latinos into the Bodden Town half and in the 77th minute Andino found the equalizer.

A second Substitution was made by Bodden Town and the game changed completely as Latinos took over the attack and lived in the Bodden Town half.

In the 82nd minute Belcher found the clincher and the game ended 2-1 in favor of Latinos.

Coach of Latinos Juan Dixon said that his team and coaching staff were surprised at the standard of game played by Bodden Town adding that the game was a good game and could have gone either way.

‘Bodden Town outplayed us in the first half and we had to take a different approach and step up the game in the second half. This was a really good game and Bodden Town played well,’ Dixon quoted.

Meanwhile, Coach McLean said that he was pleased with the team’s performance although they lost. When asked why he made the two substitutions he said that he realized that the game changed after the changes but he could not have done otherwise as both players were injured.

‘I am proud of my team after a 7-0 loss to Latinos two weeks before in the league competition, for my team to have played them so hard and scored first, I have to be proud. They are a crop of young players and have improved considerably,’ McLean boasted.
