Flames broke out on several levels of a building in a new condo development just west of the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in George Town Tuesday. Dozens of firefighters responded to the blaze behind the Phase III Lakeside condos, in the back of the units, above, and in the front, to the right.
Fire crews on the scene said no serious injuries had been reported. The fire broke out shortly after noon and was reportedly under control about an hour to an hour and a half later. Firefighters continued to douse hot spots through out the afternoon. Fire Inspector Doorly McLaughlin said flames appeared to have broken out on the lower floors of the three storey structure and spread through a stairwell to the upper floors.
The building’s construction had not been completed and no one was living there when the fire occurred. No ruling has been made on what caused the fire, but several construction workers told the Caymanian Compass they believed a welding torch had been left unattended inside the building when work crews went on lunch break.
