A man found dead inside a burning car in West Bay Friday morning was the victim of a homicide.
The determination was made after a post mortem exam revealed that the victim had suffered blunt force injuries to his head, according to police.
He was identified as Frederic Bise, a Swiss national who had worked as a banker.
The vehicle Mr. Bise was found in was parked in the driveway of a home along Mount Pleasant Road near the Pleasant View apartments. The owner of the home, airline executive Patrizia Amante, said the victim was renting from her.
Ms Amante also said he had been a good friend of hers for several years.
‘I’m devastated that this happened at my house,’ she said.
A number of potential motives for the crime were being discussed among investigators over the weekend, but Royal Cayman Islands Police Superintendent Marlon Bodden declined to go into detail about those.
‘At the moment we’re keeping an open mind,’ Mr. Bodden said.
Police established a major incident room Friday to help direct efforts in the investigation. Mr. Bise’s killing is the second to occur in Cayman so far this year.
Witnesses who reported the car fire to 911 on Friday morning said the victim’s body was found in the hatchback of the car.
Next door neighbour Kim Smith said she heard a fire alarm around 7am and attempted to douse the blaze with a garden hose. Fire crews arrived shortly after to put out the flames.
Ms Amante said she had been staying with a friend for the last few weeks and was not there when the car fire broke out. She arrived at the home around mid-morning Friday and was obviously distraught, being consoled by friends and neighbours.
By press time, there had been no word of any arrests in connection with the case.
Superintendent Bodden urged anyone who may have been in the area of Mount Pleasant Road near the Pleasant View apartments early Friday morning to contact the West Bay police station at 949-3999 or Cayman Crime Stoppers at 800-8477(TIPS).
