Bodybuilders from various countries around the world take to the stage of the Lions Centre for the Mr. & Ms. Universe Bodybuilding & Figure Championships on Saturday.
The Caribbean nations will also be well represented. Competing alongside of Cayman’s own team of nine amateurs and three professionals, the other Caribbean countries will include: Jamaica with a team of nine amateurs and one professional, St Vincent & the Grenadines with one amateur and one professional and one professional from Antigua.
One Jamaican in the competition will be fitness competitor and bodybuilder, Kurt Dunn. Anyone who attended last year’s championships will remember Dunn for his high impact routines which even incorporated the use onstage of a bicycle.
Dunn also took to the stage last year in his first try at bodybuilding and placed third in the Men’s Open Division. He hails from Kingston and will do his best this weekend to improve on last year’s result.
Dunn, 29, and standing 5ft. 9ins, is an impressive package of rippling muscle. He works as a fitness instructor and personal trainer at the Hilton Hotel in Kingston. He is also a model and chef. Titles that he has garnered for himself include: 2007 Natural Caribbean Grand Prix Fitness Champion, 2005 Mr Jamaica Caribbean, 2005 Aerobic Instructor of the Year, 2005 Mr Jamaica Fitness, 2004 Mr Jamaica Fitness, 2003 Mr Jamaica Fitness and 2002 Mr Jamaica Fitness.
The championships are promoted annually by Eye of the Tiger Productions, with an aim of building awareness of the sport within the community and to expose local athletes to international competition and give them an opportunity to win pro cards.
The championships also attract many first time visitors to the island and therefore serve to boost sports tourism.
