Shiv opens IPL account

MUMBAI, India (CMC) – Shivnarine Chanderpaul played a cameo role at the top of the order as Bangalore Royal Challengers beat Mumbai Indians in the Indian Cricket League on Sunday

Playing at the Wankhede Stadium, the left-hander blasted 16 from 11 balls which included three fours as Royal Challengers overhauled their target to reach 166 for five with two balls to spare.

Earlier, the Indians tallied 165 for six from their allotted 20 overs, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

Belligerent Indian batsman Robin Uthappa smashed 48 from 38 balls with five fours and a six to lead the Indians while Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya clobbered 29 from a mere 16 balls.

South African Shaun Pollock chipped in down the order with 28 from 12 balls with three fours and two sixes.

Indian seamer Zaheer Khan was the best bowler with two for 17 from his four overs.

Chanderpaul then added 37 from 30 balls for the first wicket with Indian batsman Rahul Dravid who cracked 32 from 33 balls.

When the Guyanese perished to a catch on the square leg boundary, South African Mark Boucher hit an unbeaten 39 from 19 balls and fellow countryman Jacques Kallis stroked 25 from 24 balls to ensure victory.
Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh took two for 36.

It was Chanderpaul’s first match of the lucrative Twenty20 league after he missed the curtain-raising match on Friday against the Kolkata Knight Riders.
