A Northward Prison inmate and a woman he was found in a car with near the prison compound were both taken into custody Thursday afternoon.
Royal Cayman Islands Police officers got a call just after noon Thursday reporting a suspicious vehicle near the prison compound. Shortly afterward, prison authorities called 911 stating that a low-security prisoner appeared to have absconded.
Police officers set up a roadblock in the area and began conducting a search. Prison officers found the inmate within 10 minutes of the 911 call. He was located inside the vehicle on a side road near the prison.
Officials said the man ran back toward the prison when he was ordered to exit the car. He was taken back inside the prison fences after being caught.
The woman who was driving the vehicle was arrested by police and has since been released. She has not been charged with any crimes.
The inmate who was in the car had been working outside the prison fence in an inmate work group when he was spotted on a closed circuit television camera in an apparent attempt to abscond.
Officers later said it appeared the man’s intention was not to abscond.
An internal investigation into the incident is under way by prison officials.
