Date set for run across America

Runner Richard Singer has just seven months to train for his world record attempt to run across America and hopes to get in a little extra practice by running across Cayman.

Cayman-based Mr. Singer has set a date of 20 February, 2009, to begin his Guinness World Record bid to run from Los Angeles to New York in 45 days to raise money for charity. He hopes to beat a record of 46 days, set 27 years ago.

Plans are afoot for a major launch event in LA, which Mr. Singer and his publicist hope will be hosted by Greg Halstead from Real World Hollywood and be attended by A-list celebrities.

In the meantime, he is looking at organising a mini version of his run here in Cayman, most likely to take in a route from West Bay to Kaibo. Once plans are finalised for that run, he hopes some of Cayman’s army of tarmac pounding runners and joggers will join him.

‘I think this would be a great way of drumming up interest locally,’ he said.

Among the beneficiaries of his charitable run will be Caymanian children as Mr. Singer plans to raise money for an International college of the Cayman Islands scholarship fund for underprivileged students.

Mr. Singer, a part-time lecturer of psychology at the college, who is also an author of inspirational books and a psychotherapist, trains twice a day to prepare for the 2,800-mile journey on foot from Los Angeles City Hall to New York City Hall.

No date has been set for the Cayman version of the run, but Mr. Singer hopes to complete his run across America on 6 April, the day his twin sons turn three-years-old.

‘We are in discussions with many large corporations such as Adidas to sponsor this event. We will also be adding Aids Foundation and the American Cancer Society to our charity list,’ Mr. Singer said.

He is hoping to attract more sponsorship from Cayman companies as all funds raised in Cayman will go to the ICCI scholarship. All monies raised in the US will be donated to a variety of charities there.

The Million Dollar Run – so named because Mr. Singer hopes to raise $1 million in his record-breaking effort – is being incorporated as a company this week and will enable a bank account to be opened into which funds can be paid. Currently donations are being paid into a US account.
