Grannies prepare for a glamorous affair

Some 14 contestants will compete this Saturday in the annual Glamorous Granny, Full Figure and Modern Ms pageant.

The event will be held at Mary Miller Hall, Red Bay. Doors open at 5.30pm. Showtime is 7pm.

In addition to crowning three Queens, the pageant also serves as a fundraiser, supporting several non-profit community programmes, such as the Pines Retirement Home, the Kirkconnell Community Care Centre in Cayman Brac and the Cayman Islands Veterans Association. In addition, part proceeds from the event will also go to baby Josiah Estrella who is in need of further medical treatment.

The Glamorous Granny pageant is designed for grandmothers of all ages, the Full Figure for women of all ages that are plus size and Modern Ms is for all women aged 18 to 35.

The committee has had many successful entrants and in 1998, eight previous winners were all entered into the Glamorous Granny Worldwide, in Houston Texas, with each Queen bringing home awards; including pageant director Jewel Smalldon, who received ‘Pageant Director of the Year.’

Past participants have raised funds for schools, sang for retirees, held tea parties for the elderly and travelled abroad to represent the Cayman Islands.

Contestants this year will have the prospects of winning several prizes including brunch for two at Portofino, a salon gift certificate from Hair Nook, certificates from Funky Tangs and Petique and a selection of Black Coral Jewellery.

Tickets are $25 at the door. Admission for children is $10. Under six years go free.
